Weekly Student and Parent/Guardian Messages

January 27, 2023

Hello Laker students, parents/guardians,

With the conclusion of the Final Reassessment Period and Diploma Exams, I am anticipating a great start to Semester 2 and Term 3. This is a new beginning with new classes and new learning experiences.

Students and parents/guardians should be reminded that there was a change to the RVS school calendar and classes resume for students on Monday, January 30, 2023. Our School Counsellors have been working diligently to make course changes and ensuring that classes are balanced. All our Lakers must check PowerSchool for the most updated and accurate information, so they know what classrooms to go to on Monday. All students must follow their schedule in PowerSchool.

I am looking forward to having almost a thousand students back in our building for the start of the second half of the school year. Have a great weekend.

January 24, 2023

Hello Laker students, parents/guardians,

Hopefully students are taking advantage of the Final Re-assessment Period to ensure their assessments are an appropriate reflection of their understanding. The last day of reassessments is Thursday, January 26th, 2023.

ChatGPT
ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence (AI) that can write essays, position papers, poems, stories, etc., that emulates human responses. Educational organizations and our staff are working through the implications of this new technology. All students and parents/guardians need to be aware that utilizing AI programs to complete schoolwork is the essence of academic dishonesty and is strictly prohibited.

December 12, 2022

Hello Laker students, parents/guardians,

With less than two weeks remaining before the winter break, it is essential that students/parents keep their focus on learning as most, if not all, curriculum will be covered before we leave. When we return in January, there will only be eight days of classes before the Final Reassessment Period that starts on January 19, 2022.

Here are a few reminders for the week.

Culinary
The Lakers Bistro will not be open on December 21st or 22nd or January 9th. The program needs some time to clean the kitchen before the holidays. Thank you to everyone who has supported our culinary program this year.

Performing Arts
For those interested in joining the Performing Arts class and being a part of the spring production, students are encouraged to join Ms. Fulthorpe and Mrs. Ploughman on Thursday, December 15th at lunch in the band room. An information session will be held regarding which play we are presenting, roles being offered, audition information, backstage crew, stage design, tech, costuming, musicians, singers, and dancers. All are welcome! Please speak with Ms. Fulthorpe if you have further questions.

Athletics
Message from Mr. Ledieu: Congrats to our Varsity Boys and Girls basketball teams on a great weekend at Hunting Hills High School in Red Deer. Both teams were in the finals against Lindsay Thurber. Our girls finished runners up after a strong weekend of play. Our boys won the tournament in a thrilling 91-80 final that was much closer than the score suggests. It was a one or two possession game inside of five minutes.

Our J.V. Boys Basketball team hosts CLMS at 6:00 P.M. on Wednesday, December 14th and they play at W. G. Murdock on Thursday, December 15th in Crossfield. Our Varsity Boys and Girls Basketball teams play in exhibition games on Tuesday, December 13th in Okotoks.

Music Department
All students/parents/guardians are welcome to attend the CHS Concert - Holiday Soundtracks on Tuesday, December 13, 2022. Doors will open at 6:30 P.M. and the concert will start at 7:00 P.M. in the Wilson Gym. Come out for a wonderful evening of classic holiday movie songs performed by all CHS ensembles to get you in a festive mood.

Winter Break
Just a reminder that Thursday, December 22nd will be the last day of classes before the winter break. Our first day back will be Monday, January 9th, 2023.

Have a great rest of the week.

Together in a safe space, the group will explore:

  • Body Positivity
  • Mindfulness
  • Creative Expression
  • Influence of Social Media
  • Building Community

The program is based off of The Body Positive’s Be Body Positive group curriculum with some modifications and additions from Stepping Stones to Mental Health. Be Body Positive is an evidence-based program for “increasing self-compassion, reducing anxiety and depression, and fostering a positive relationship between one’s body, food, and exercise.” If you think your child could benefit from this program, please email the student’s first and last name to Ms.

Grimbly and Ms. Sands at kgrimbly@rockyview.ab.ca and ssands@rockyview.ab.ca before October 18th. Ms. Sands and/or Ms. Grimbly will be meeting with students on October 19th to gauge their interest in participating in the program, with a tentative start date of October 26th.

August 18, 2022
It is my genuine hope that all our CHHS families had a restful, healthy, and invigorating summer break. For our new grade ten students and parents/guardians - welcome. Throughout the year, I will send out weekly messages with school reminders and celebrations. Although school doesn't start until September, there are many reminders and tasks to complete to ensure an efficient start-up.
  • If you have received this email and your child(ren) are not attending Chestermere High School for the 2022-2023 school year. Please email Ms. Pollock at kpollock@rockyview.ab.ca with the student's name and the new school they will be enrolled in.
  • Our Main Office opens on Wednesday, August 24, 2022. Our website is a great source of general information. https://chestermerehg.rockyview.ab.ca/. Our school phone number is 403.272.8868.
  • Current student schedules for the 2022-2023 school year are available on PowerSchool. https://ps.rockyview.ab.ca/public/home.html. Students had an opportunity to request course changes in the spring but if there have been any changes over the summer, for example, completion of summer school courses or if students need additional support, the school is available to answer your questions. Ms. Allan can be reached at ballan@rockyview.ab.ca. All class change requests must be made through the official class change Google Form located here: https://forms.gle/5VAFshT2kYehXkQ76.
  • First day of classes for grade 10s only is Thursday, September 1, 2022. On Friday, September 2, 2022, all students will attend.
  • Student ID photos will be on August 29, 30, and 31, 2022. Students will need their photo IDs on the first day, so we have scheduled drop-in days for students to get their pictures taken. Students can choose any date that works for them and can drop-in between the hours of 9:00 A.M. and 2:30 P.M. in the North Social Area. There is a retake date (TBD) for students who can't make these dates, however, I encourage all students to stop in on one of these dates if possible.
  • Busing - if parents/guardians haven't registered and require busing, please do so as soon as possible. Registration is completed through your PowerSchool Parent Portal/School Engage account. https://ps.rockyview.ab.ca/public/home.html. I will continue to update students and parents as we get closer to the first days of school. I hope everyone enjoys the warm weather. Take care and I look forward to seeing all our Lakers in September.
